How Can Technology Make Seniors Happier

It’s not often you can say that technology makes people smile more. But in the assisted living and memory care neighborhoods of The Glen at Lake Oconee Village, it’s definitely true.

At The Glen, and in other forward-thinking retirement communities around the nation, residents are benefiting from cutting edge technology and innovation that offers more ways to connect, engage and enjoy life. For example:

•  IN2L (It’s Never Too Late) interactive computer system that allows residents to play dynamic games, watch movies and programs, and communicate with friends and family via a live web camera. IN2L breaks down barriers and enables all residents, including those with memory loss, to share their world with caregivers and family members.

•  Odyssey system™ is a web-based portal that provides a platform for residents and communities to stay engaged and share information on events, activities, and news.

•  Heartfelt CONNECTIONS, A Memory Care Program®, with Life Bio® reminiscence tools for capturing each person’s legacy. Insights gained from each life story are applied to a distinctive program of care, with customized activities that promote physical and emotional well-being, help to prolong daily functioning, and maintain a sense of purpose, satisfaction, and self-worth.

• A free iPad® for each resident in assisted living upon move in to help residents stay in touch with long distance family, as well as stay current on timely events and information.
Keeping seniors connected can open them up to a whole new world. Sitting in front of a computer touch screen, and with some assistance from a caregiver or physical therapist, a senior can visit a museum they’ve never seen. Read a newspaper from their hometown. See photographs of their grandchild’s soccer game. Email a friend they haven’t talked to in decades.

In addition, research is showing that many residents who previously did not want to leave their rooms and socialize are benefiting from this new technology that connects them in a comfortable way with the outside world.

“We’re excited to offer life-changing technology in our community,” said The Glen Director of Health Services Amy Booth. “We are committed to staying on the leading edge of innovation and care. Our assisted living and memory care residents have the benefit of cutting-edge programming, 24-hour nursing, and an exceptional staff, as well as the latest tools for engaging.”

In addition, Booth said assisted living residents at The Glen enjoy larger apartment residences with full-sized refrigerators and a washer and dryer in each residence. “Everything is about providing a lifestyle that is satisfying, rewarding and stimulating. People’s needs may change, but their interests and desire to be comfortable do not.”
